In March 2018 we spent a couple of weeks touring the North Island of New Zealand. I was, predictably, soon seeking out the native flora to draw.<\/p>\n

Many indigenous New Zealand plants are very different from what we are used to seeing here in Australia.<\/p>\n

I was particularly entranced by the mosses and ferns, for which New Zealand is well known.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

We spent some time walking in the forest at Tongariro National Park, which is a World Heritage listed site and a marvelous place to visit.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n<\/div>\n

One of my sketches while there was of the Nothofagus solandri<\/em>, Tawhairauriki, Mountain Beech.<\/p>\n

It is a very graceful tree from that region, with an unusual habit in which the branches spread out sideways.<\/p>\n

I was able to draw a small branch of the Mountain Beech. The leaves are tiny, so it was quite a challenge.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n
